As we age, our skin naturally loses some elasticity and our breasts may begin to sag. Women are especially prone to sagging breasts if they’ve had children, breastfed, lost a lot of weight or just have bad genetics. The breasts begin to droop, lose their firmness and the nipple points toward the ground instead of straight ahead. This can cause some embarrassment and you may be uncomfortable if someone, including your spouse, sees you naked. A breast lift will eliminate these issues and make you feel attractive and confident, whether you are in your clothes or not. While women are more likely to have a breast lift, men can also suffer from sagging breast tissue, a condition called gynecomastia, and can benefit from a tightening and lift to regain a natural-looking shape.

What is a Breast Lift?

Breast lift surgery, also known as Mastopexy, removes excess skin and elevates the breasts, creating a more youthful look. The incisions are generally made around the nipple and down the underside of the breast so a bra or a bathing suit will hide any scarring. When the excess skin has been removed, the nipple and areola are moved to a higher position as the breast is reshaped and lifted. Many breast lift patients also choose to have a breast enlargement procedure done at the same time. The combination of a breast lift and breast implants can greatly improve the size and shape of the breasts.

Are There Risks Involved?

A breast lift is a relatively safe operation with the common risks involved with anesthesia and infection that can occur in the incision site possible. Making sure that you follow your surgeon’s instructions during recovery can decrease the possibility of infection and problems with healing. A breast lift is different from a breast implant because the nipple and areola are directly affected during a lift. This can cause some problems with the nipple including the loss of sensation or increased sensitivity, difficulty breastfeeding or a possible problem with blood flow that can cause a wound on the nipple that will need further treatment. These problems are rare and the right surgeon will take the proper steps and precautions to make sure the possibility is even less.

What About Results?

A breast lift is an outpatient procedure, so you will go home the same day as your surgery. You will be sore and tired for a few days afterwards. You will be able to return to work in about a week, but you will want to keep to light duty activities. You will need to limit your activity for about a month before returning to a normal routine. Your breasts will be swollen at first and will gradually return to normal, where you will be able to see your new, youthful, perky breasts. It is important to remember that not everyone heals at the same rate and it may take less time or more time depending on your specific situation.
