Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgery isn’t just for people over 60. While the “droopy” or “baggy” eyelids are associated with age, many people are born with inherited genes that cause them to need eyelid surgery in their 20’s or 30’s. These issues, along with puffiness and dark circles, can leave you looking constantly tired and worn out. Since your face is one of the first things people notice, maintaining an alert and bright-eyed look is important in many situations such as dating, job interviews and meeting new people. Many cosmetic surgery patients will also have facelifts performed at the same time as their eyelid lift so their face looks as youthful and energetic on the outside as they feel on the inside.

What Exactly is an Eyelid Lift Surgery?

Also known as blepharoplasty, eyelid surgery can give you a younger, more refreshed look by removing excess skin and muscle from around your eyes. When you age, you lose skin elasticity which gives your eyes that constant droopy look. An eyelid lift will remove the skin and reposition the muscles and tendons to give you a rejuvenated appearance. An eyelid lift can be performed on the upper and lower eyelid to reshape the eye. An upper eyelid lift helps to create that youthful look that you desire while the lower eyelid lift will eliminate those annoying puffy bags and under-eye circles that make you look exhausted even when you are wide awake!

What Can I Expect?

During your eyelid lift, incisions are made along the natural crease of your upper eyelid and just below the bottom lashes. Excess fat, muscle and skin is removed and the incisions are closed using very fine sutures. Once healed, the scars will be all but invisible. Your procedure will last a couple of hours and you will be able to go home the same day. You may have some swelling and bruising that will go away in about a week. You should sleep with your head elevated while you are recovering and follow all the aftercare instructions given to you so you will have optimum results and no problems while you are healing.

Are There Any Risks Involved?

With any surgery, there are some risks. Problems with anesthesia and infection of the incision site are possible. If you choose a qualified Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, those risks can be greatly reduced, if not eliminated. Double or blurred vision following eyelid surgery may occur for a few days. Swelling in the corners of the eyes is also temporary as the eyes heal. Some bruising can be expected after the procedure, but this should fade within a couple of weeks. You may also experience some issues with dry eyes, especially if you wear contacts, but this can be resolved with over-the-counter eye drops.

What About Results?

After your procedure, your makeup will go on smoother and you will no longer need concealer to cover up those dark circles! Natural aging and damage from the sun will still occur even after your surgery, so applying moisturizer and sunscreen daily is a must. You will be amazed at the stunning difference an eyelid lift will make!
