Breast Reduction

While there are some women dreaming of larger breasts, there are others who are longing for smaller breasts. Women with large breasts often have health problems, including back pain, neck pain, skin irritation, skeletal deformities and breathing problems. In addition, unusually large breasts can also cause bra straps to leave deep impressions in the shoulders which can be painful. Women can begin having these problems very early in life and can be very uncomfortable and self-conscious. Breast reduction surgery is designed to help alleviate this very unpleasant problem.

Breast reduction is not just for women. It can also be performed on men suffering from gynecomastia, a disorder that causes excess growth of the breast tissue.  Breast reduction can help men to eliminate excess tissue and give a more defined chest.

What is Breast Reduction?

During breast reduction surgery, the extra fat, tissue and skin is removed, restoring the breasts to a more natural look that complements a woman’s shape. As with breast lift surgery, the incisions are made around the areola and down to the edge of the breast tissue. After removing the excess fat, tissue and skin, the areola and nipple are moved higher on the breast and the breast is reshaped. Although the scars are permanent, they can be hidden by a bra or bathing suit. There are several methods to do a breast reduction surgery and your plastic surgeon will explain the one that is right for you. There really is not a “one size fits all” procedure, and every patient will have their breast reduction surgery tailored to their specific needs.

What Should I Expect?

A breast reduction is normally a same-day surgery and will last for approximately two to three hours. You will be able to go home the same day with instructions for your recovery given to you by your surgeon. You will need to rest for about a week before returning to work. Breast reduction surgery has very little pain associated with it and most patients will feel the relief of their prior symptoms immediately after surgery.

Are There Risks Involved?

Just like any surgical procedure, a breast reduction has some risk. Unexpected complications or a reaction to anesthesia may occur or the incision may become infected after surgery. Another risk associated with breast reduction is a sensitivity or numbness in the nipple. You may not be able to breastfeed after having this type of surgery, so you will want to take that into consideration if you are planning to have children after your procedure.

What About Results?

Your breasts will be swollen after surgery, but you will immediately look and feel a lot better! Your back and neck pain should be eliminated and your pain from surgery will be minimal. After your swelling is gone, you will have smaller, more perky breasts that look amazing. The best part about a breast reduction is the fact that you get a breast lift in addition to your reduction! Your scars will fade over time and you will look fantastic in and out of your clothes.
